On May 22, the Philoptochos held a “ Big Fat Greek Luncheon” for tornado relief. A Big Fat Greek THANK YOU to everyone who donated items, helped prepare food, baked items for the bake sale, publicized the event and worked at the luncheon.  Sonthe Burge led the community in putting this together in less than 2 weeks and did a GREAT job!!!  We raised over $$9,000.00 and should be able to give the Tornado relief fund $9,500.00!!!

We know that many in our church community want to provide their time, talent and treasures to help with the devastation coming out of the tornadoes.   Father Paul is leading a committee to develop the right short term and long term plan so that we can concentrate our efforts in the best way.  In the meantime here are some things you can do right now:

Please donate to the Agape Tornado Relief Fund:
Many of you have asked what you could do to help ad more than anything the agencies need money right now.  So the church created the Agape Tornado Relief Fund.  As of Tuesday May 1th, 2011 the total amount raised for the Agape Fund - Tornado Relief is $49,200.  THANK YOU to all who have donated and solicited donations from across the country.  This money will go directly to Tornado Relief efforts.  If you have not donated, please mail your check into the Cathedral and make it out to:

AGAPE FUND  (in the memo line Tornado Relief)
c/o Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral
307 19th Street South
Birmingham, AL 35233

The Tornado Relief Committee will continue to assess the best way to allocate the money.  We have so far executed our immediate goal, which was to raise money and participate in a nonperishable food drive.

The Long Term plan will be to best allocate the dollars we raised and work alongside those trained in Disaster Recovery such as the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and/or the International Orthodox Christian Charities etc....  More information to follow.

Be informed on how to help!

The best way to stay up to speed on our tornado relief efforts is to join Facebook and LIKE the Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Alabama Tornado Relief Fund Page.   The latest news will be there or sent via the E-Bulletins.

Tornado Relief ACTION!

Work in the Field

Many community members would like to volunteer in the field.   This may mean cooking a meal for the volunteers, sorting clothes at a relief center or cleaning debris - the opportunities are limitless.  How would you like to help?  Each month we will choose one or two projects to participate in and send it out through the E-Bulletin or on the Tornado Relief Facebook page.
May 28th

On May
28th a group from the Mobile community led by Fr. Elias joined us as we
had a long but moving day of serving our community, cleaning, building,
and demolition.

Please join us Saturday June 18th as we assist
with the recovery following April's devastating tornadoes. We will check
in at 4800 Allen Street, Birmingham AL 35207 at 7:30 and will meet with
our trained coordinator who will be directing us on the job.

Volunteers will be divided among the various disaster recovery sites by the site
supervisors each day. We will have a variety of homes going at the same
time. We anticipate rebuilding or repairing dozens of homes in this
community over the summer and need lots of helping hands. Some homes
will be built from the slab up, some are extensive repairs, some involve
minor repairs, and there is a continuing need for debris removal. Tools
and instruction will be provided but we were advised to bring gloves.

If you are able to help this Saturday please RSVP no later than Wednesday (June 15th ) with Micah at Mixiais@hotmail.com

The work day is 7:30 - 2 pm
